Exclusive Interview: JETRO in China for 10 Years

Our correspondents often run into staff from Japan External Trade Organization(JETRO)in various activities related to Japanese enterprises. It has been 10 years since JETRO launched the relevant IP projects in China in 2000, which has developed with the same pace of China's strengthening and boosting related IP activities after China's entry into WTO. Therefore, JETRO has had the real feel about Chinese IP related changes for 10 years in WTO.


In recent years, JETRO has sped up in China, which is attributed to the more importance that Chinese government, enterprises and relevant departments has attached and the demand of Sino-Janpan trade development. According to the statistics from JETRO, in the first half of this year, Japanese direct overseas investment is $33.47 billion, 63.1% increase year-on-year, among which investment in China is $5.24billio with an increase of 113.2%, accounting for 15.6% of the total sum which is second to the investment in UK of $6.01billion with 18% of the total sum. In the first half of this year, the total sum of Japanese investment in Asia is $13.57billion with an increase of 107.3% year on year which accounts for 40.5% of the gross investment. The main targeted investees besides China are Indonesia( $1.76 billion), South Korea ($1.18billion ), Vietnam ($1.17billion) and Thailand ($1.12billion).


JETRO has been expanding in China for 10 years with the development of China IP laws and regulation, government function and enterprises' awareness, etc. Nowadays JETRO must have witnessed tremendous changes in China compared with the beginning of China's entry into the WTO.


The 10 years since China's entry into WTO is very vital for China IP development. Our correspondent paid a special visit to the headquarter of JETRO and specially interviewed Mr. Gaozujishi, the deputy director of IP department in Beijing office, to experience 10 years' great changes of IP through their experiences.

2004. 5   The second governmental and folk delegation group for IP R protection was dispatched to China.
2005. 6   The Third governmental and folk delegation group for IP R protection was dispatched to China.
2005. 8   PG Guangdong office was established
2005.12 Japanese Corporate Intellectual Property and the Collection of Counterfeit Products Identification Methods Amendment was compiled and published
2006.6   The Fourth governmental and folk delegation group for IP R protection was dispatched to China (Top-level).
2007.9   The Fifth governmental and folk delegation group for IP R protection was dispatched to China (Top-level).
2007.8   The first R&D Visit and Learning of IPG was held.
2008.4   The IPG Best Practice Award was held.
2009.2   The Sixth governmental and folk delegation group for IP R protection was dispatched to China (Top-level).
2009.8   Cooperation on IPR protection memorandum was concluded by Japan's trade ministry and State Administration for                         Industry and Commerce of the People's Republic of China.
2010.3  Sino-Japan commercial chamber compiled China's economy and Japanese companies in 2010 White Paper including suggestions to send to related IP departments,
2010.3  Japan Agency for Cultural Affairs and the Chinese National Copyright Administration concluded on copyright and                              neighboring rights memorandum of strategic cooperation.China IP
